The three theories that I have chosen are the Social Cultural theory by Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, the Cognitive development theory by Swish developmental psychologist Jean Piaget and lastly the attachment theory by American developmental psychologist Mary Ainsworth.

In contrast of Piaget, Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist and philosopher in the 1930’s, is most often associated with the social constructivist theory and came into three general claims; Culture - which is that higher mental functioning in the individual emerged out of social processes.
(Flanagan 1999 P.57) Vygotsky believed that intellectual development was continually evolving without an end point and not completed in stages as Piaget theorised.
This is the interest between characteristics, the individual’s behaviour and environmental factors including social context and their impact on developments Piaget and Vygotsky had many similarities in their ideas they both looked at children’s cognitive development of knowledge and had the theory that there are things beyond a Childs understanding but their approaches to these ideas were different.
Vygotsky although critical of Piaget, realised the importance of the information that Piaget had gathered and in spite of his criticisms, Vygotsky built his educational theories on the strengths of Piaget's theories.
